Arc Named LONGINES World's Best Horse Race, Top 100 G1s Revealed
19 January 2016
Coinciding with the LONGINES World's Best Racehorse and LONGINES World's Best Horse Race Ceremony, the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities has published its annual top 100 Group 1 and Grade 1 races.
The ranked list is compiled using the annual race ratings, an average of the LONGINES World's Best Racehorse Rankings ratings of the first four placed horses in each of the past three years. For the first time, LONGINES and the IFHA have used this list to name the LONGINES World's Best Horse Race.
The inaugural winner of the award is France's Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, as it achieved a rating of 125.75 for the years 2013-2015. One of the most respected races in the world, Longchamp's premier contest was won by Treve (co-highest rated horse in the world, 2013) in both 2013 and 2014, while the 2015 edition went to Golden Horn, Europe's Horse of the Year.
The remaining top 10 rated races are the Breeders' Cup Classic (124.33), Juddmonte International Stakes (122.67), LONGINES Breeders' Cup Turf (122.50), QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes (122.50), Prince of Wales's Stakes (122.25), Japan Cup in association with LONGINES (121.25), Prix du Haras De Fresnay-le-Buffard - Jacques Le Marois (121.00), AP Queen Elizabeth II Cup (120.83), and the QIPCO Champion Stakes (120.75).
The top rated races in the 5 respective distance categories are the Darley T. J. Smith Stakes (119.33-Sprint), Prix du Haras de Fresnay Le Buffard-Jacques Le Marois (121.00-Mile), Breeders' Cup Classic (124.33-Intermediate), Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (125.75-Long), and Tenno Sho (Spring) (118.08-Extended).
The top 3-year-old race in the world is the Belmont Stakes Presented by Draftkings (119.92), while the highest rated race for fillies and mares is the Qatar Prix Vermeille (117.00).
Because of a three-way tie for the final spot on the list of Top 100 G1 races, the 2015 edition consists of 102 races. Twelve countries comprise this year's list, representing the foremost racing events throughout the world across 39 different racecourses. Australia leads all countries with 23 total races, followed by the United States of America (21), Great Britain (17), France (10), Hong Kong (10), Japan (10), United Arab Emirates (4), Ireland (3), Canada (1), Germany (1), Singapore (1), and South Africa (1).
In the context of their partnership, LONGINES and the IFHA have created a set of prizes rewarding racehorses, jockeys and prominent women and men of the equestrian world. The LONGINES World's Best Horse Race was created to complete this collection of awards by rewarding the top race in the world.
The top 100 Group 1 and Grade 1 races also serve as the base of an annual competition to recognize top jockeys throughout the world. The jockey who outperforms his or her peers in these races is honoured with the LONGINES World's Best Jockey Award. Frankie Dettori was crowned the 2015 LONGINES World's Best Jockey, while Ryan Moore was awarded the inaugural title in December 2014.
The 2016 LONGINES World's Best Jockey Award will be based upon performances in these 100 highest-rated Group 1 and Grade 1 races from 1 December 2015 until 30 November 2016. Jockeys accrue 12 points for a win, 6 points for placing second, and 4 points for placing third.
