Hong Kong betting turnover in the lift

According to the latest estimations, the total betting turnover for the 2006/07 racing season is expected to be around HK$64 billion. This is a rise of 6.4 percent on last year's HK$60.05 billion and is great news after seven years of stagnation.

According to the Club's CEO Engelbrecht-Bresges, the upswing was a result of several factors, including a change in the way horse racing in Hong Kong is taxed, the club's rebate program for big-time punters, improved facilities for the betting public at both racecourses and several off- course betting centers, and the improvement in the economy.

The club is drawing up a master plan to make better use of the two racecourses on non racedays.
