Australia relaxes advertising rules for betting

The governments of the two largest racing states, Victoria and New South Wales, announced to lift the current advertising restrictions to outer state licenced bookmakers. According to a joint statement: “The proposed changes will create an opportunity for bookmakers in both Victoria and New South Wales to grow their businesses through advertising generally and will also provide new revenue streams for racing clubs in both states through advertising and race sponsorship.”

The change in government policy is the result of a decision by the country's High Court in the recent case launched by Betfair. The Court ruling implied that laws prohibiting interstate wagering operators from advertising in other Australian states may be inconstitutional.

The existing restrictions on advertising by overseas bookmakers would remain.
