Washington adopts new law against eGambling

A new law in the state of Washington (U.S.) has made online gambling a felony (before, it was a misdemeanour).

Politicians who backed the law believe that the law, whose main objective is to protect consumers, will be difficult to enforce. This view is not shared by politicians in other states and countries, who trust in geo-location software, credit card control and other technical means to control undesired internet transactions.

One of the main consequences of the law is that offenders can now be put in jail, from 90 days for first time offenders to up to one year for others.

The only exception is made for betting on horseracing in certain state licensed wagering firms, which has been allowed in a 2004 law.
