Swedish gaming monopoly to offer online poker

In order to offer a legal alternative to Swedish residents who play online poker on the various unauthorised off-shore betting sites, the Swedish state licensed betting and gaming operator Svenska Spel has launched its own online poker game.

According to Svenska Spel estimates, there is a demand for online poker that has resulted in 200,000 Swedish players who play illegally today. The new authorised offer will address particular national concerns about problem gambling and addiction. For exampme, it would not offer free rolls or rake backs and would not reactivate lapsed accounts. Deposits will have to be made from Swedish bank accounts and players, Swedish or not, will have to be residents in the country in order to play.

Svenska Spel announced that already 12,000 people have signed up to the new game after one week.
