Swedish Supreme Court confirms gaming monopoly

Earlier this week, the Supreme Administrative Court of Sweden prohibited a foreign operator to offer betting services through a land-based terminal and a website.

The Court also ruled that it is illegal for Swedish media to run advertisements by foreign gambling companies. Foreign betting companies used to advertise in newspapers and pay football clubs for shirt sponsoring.

In more general terms, the Court Ruling is also a confirmation that the Swedish State Monopoly is in conformity with EU law, including its case law (like the “Gambelli” judgement by the European Court of Justice).
